TMNT - The Toys are Now Available In Happy Meals, But Is the Movie OK for Kids?

By March 26, 2007

Follow me on:

Go to any McDonalds, and you can find Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys in the Happy Meals. I've heard kids as young as three begging for the toys and subsequently asking parents to see the movie. In fact, three and four-year-olds attended the same showing of the movie that I did. The movie is obviously being marketed to young children, and it's up to their parents whether or not the movie is appropriate for their kids. But, should these movies be so blatantly marketed to young kids?

An even more egregious example of this type of marketing is last year's Happy Meal toys featuring characters and logos from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. I assume the same thing will happen this year when the third installment of the story, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, comes out. These movies are PG-13, but the marketing is clearly directed at very young children. For this reason, I am going to review Pirates, Spiderman, and a few other movies, even though I don't usually review PG-13 movies. Since kids will be begging to see them, I think parents will be interested in reading about the content.

I’m not really happy about these toys being markets to young kids, even if the movie isn’t supposedly for them – it reminds me of advertising cigarettes to kids.
