Journey to the Center of the Earth - 3D Movie on DVD

The 3D theater experience made Journey to the Center of the Earth fun, but what about watching 3D movies on your own home theater? Are the glasses more of a pain that they're worth? Do the effects look as good at home as they did in the theater? These are questions that will be on consumers minds more and more in the coming months, as the number of 3D theatrical releases continues to increase.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a family thrill ride through the precarious center of the earth, where man-eating creatures and dangerous terrain threaten the lives of teenager Sean, his uncle Trevor, and their mountain guide, Hannah. Without the 3D effects, the movie would have been OK at best, but 3D dinosaurs and carnivorous plants jumping out of the screen made the theater experience worth it. At home, however, the 3D effects come at some expense of the film quality. Colors look muted, and depending on the setup you have, parts of the film may not have good resolution.

The DVD contains both the regular and 3D versions of the film, but this movie is just obviously better in 3D (assuming you can deal with the glasses and that the movie works well with your particular home theater setup). One tip for getting the best picture quality for a 3D movie at home: watch it in Blu-ray if you can, especially if you have a large TV, as the resolution will not look as good with just a regular DVD. As more kids and family movies become available in 3D, we will explore further tips for getting the best possible quality, so that the family can hopefully enjoy the movie at home just as much as they did in the theater.

I bought this movie because I also saw it at the movies and it was awesome. Unfortunately it does not look 3d at all with the 3d glasses on the dvd i bought so my family was quite bummed out over that. We were all expecting it to be as good as it was at the movies but not even close. I can’t wait til they can come up with something that actually works in 3d on my home system.

Must agree with Lanaya. I also saw this at the movie theatre and the 3D effects were very awesome!. However, I just finished viewing this as a HD-DVD on a large HD LCD screen at home and the technology used to create the 3D effect is completely different. The is some 3D effect, but at the loss of color, since it uses red/green lenses as the optical filters. We ended up watching it without the 3D glasses – it was better that way.

I also saw this at the movie, I expected the DVD to have the same effect. I was very disappointed. The glasses made the movie terrible. I tried using the glasses from the movie, that didn’t work. We ended up watching the movie in 2D. Any suggestion to help watching this in 3D.

I agree. The colour distortion from the glasses was very disconcerting. I thought that perhaps the TV needed to be adjusted, but there were no such instructions with the DVD.

Can the TV be tweaked, or are we left with a movie with not-so-good 3D effects and poor colour?

I think this green0red filter on the 3d glasses is the worst thing I’ve evere experienced. Yor sight its constantly changing paterns of red and green. Ive seen oter filtering method that uses dark grey lenses for filtering. I believe is another method but is the best since you dont get to change colours

You must have a DLP t.v. to play 3D
I entered in Google: my 3d movies are color distorted and discovered this.

You can’t use the gray glasses on a TV. They use polarized light which is relatively straight forward to do on a projector, but impossible on a standard TV set.
