We All Live in a Yellow Submarine...

Saturday September 12, 2009

Up until this last week, a lot of kids didn't even know who The Beatles were, but introductions are quickly being made as Beatlemania is once again sweeping the world with the highly acclaimed new game The Beatles: Rock Band. Kids are being introduced to more than 40 Beatles hits as they attempt to make their guitars gently weep and their voices croon just like the Fab Four. The game is being touted as one of the best ever made and will surely be on every video game holiday gift list.

All this leads me to Disney's recent announcement that movie goers will someday get a ticket to ride on a fantastic 3D performance capture adventure: a new adaptation of the 1968 hit animated film Yellow Submarine. Performance capture is the same technology used to make The Polar Express and the upcoming Disney's A Christmas Carol . The technology will give a whole new look and feel to the original animated fantasy, which follows John, Paul, George and Ringo as they set off in a yellow submarine on a journey to free Pepperland from the Blue Meanies and restore music and harmony. The movie will be directed by Robert Zemeckis and has a tentative 2012 release date.

Minor nit; it wasn’t “their” Yellow Submarine. It was sent with its captain, “Young Fred” to find the boys to bring them to Pepperland.

I love Disney, and I love Robert Zemeckis…but I have serious misgivings about this.
