Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

I'm determined not to get busy cooking this year and forget to turn on the Macy's Parade. I like to have it on in the background, so I can run out of the kitchen and catch the really good floats. As usual, the parade will air on NBC 9 a.m. to noon.

This year, we'll see a lot of big balloons from popular movies. A big Kermit the Frog balloon from Disney will excite fans who have seen the new Muppets movie.  And, the big green frog will be joined by a big blue smurf. Clumsy Smurf, one of the stars in the new Smurfs movie that came out this year, will be a highlight for kids as well. Kids can also look forward to many more balloons like Hello Kitty, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Kung Fu Panda.

My kids have inherited my love of creating whimsical things like dioramas, Halloween costumes and miniature fairy towns, so the floats are our favorite by far. A fun activity to keep kids busy and out of the kitchen is to allow them to make their own miniature float. Pick a theme and find items around the house to use to create the float. You can use an upside down shoebox as a base, or just a board or piece of cardboard.

Since my own childhood, I don’t think I have EVER missed the Macy’s Parade. The last few years I have simply announced to my husband and kids that those 3 hours are MINE. The last couple of years my older daughter (now 9), simply joined me in watching. This year, for the first time, she said that she was looking forward to watching it with me!!! And the tradition is passed on (I expect that my younger daughter, who is almost 7, will simply join me; in a couple of years she may look forward to it as well.)
