"Da da da da da da Afro Circus, Afro..." Wild, colorful, zany and absolutely animal, Madagascar 3 will be a winner with the kiddos. Personally, I wanted to see a little more Europe and a lot more meat to the story, but overall, this third installment in the Madagascar franchise isn't too bad.
Our kids loved it, but they seriously will not stop with the circus-tune-spoofing Afro Circus song. And as much as it has grown obnoxious to my ears, I find myself using the same tune to make up silly songs to get my kids to do things -- "da da da da da da get your shoes on, hurry up, hurry up, get your shoes on!" Yes, I'm annoying even myself there, but somehow it works for the kids. (You can see the song in the Madagascar 3 movie trailer.)
We loved the new characters in the movie, especially the infamous Capitaine Chantel Dubois, who was my girls' favorite in the film, and the chimps dressed up as the King of Versaillesis is comedic genius. From a parent's perspective, the content was under control and generally kid friendly. For more on that, see the Madagascar 3 Movie Review for Parents.
So overall, the movie was a win for our family, and we have been helping the kids learn about some of the countries in Europe in honor of the movie. At least they can find Europe on the globe and name a good number of the countries there, so that's a start.
