Are you thinking of taking the kids to see ParaNorman, but you're not sure if it will be too scary? You may have good reason for concern. Think of the movie as 80s zombie flick meets Poltergeist in a sort of trashy but gloriously animated small town setting. Not only does the movie contain scenes that could be terrifying to kids, it also surpasses most animated films in the categories of rude humor and crude jokes. Does this mean that I didn't like the movie? Oh no. I thought it was great fun. I appreciated the artistry. My husband and I laughed out loud several times, though not nearly as many times as the lady in the row behind us. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that the writers went farther than necessary with the crude humor. Just a touch too far. Just far enough that even my oldest will not be watching the movie again any time soon.
Sad, because we enjoyed the raucous zombie fest injected with wry humor, and we liked the endearing Norman and the general message of the movie. The ghostly subject matter and autumnal settings got us in the mood for fall. But, our oldest daughter was uncomfortable with some of the language and jokes in the movie, and I wish I would have previewed the film before taking her to it.
