If you were planning on a Valentine's Day movie with the family to see the new release Escape from Planet Earth, you will have to wait a bit longer. The movie has been delayed by one day and will now open in theaters on Friday, February 15.
Escape from Planet Earth is the first animated movie of 2013 and follows the story of an alien who has to rescue his brother from a dreaded planet (that's right, Earth!). Past animated movies from The Weinstein Company have been a mixed bag with some serious fails -- anyone heard of Doogle? No? Or, there's the condescending Hoodwinked 2, sequel to the actually pretty great Hoodwinked.
Where animated movies from Weinstein seem to really go wrong is in the comedy. Using pop culture references that are overdone and out of place isn't clever or funny. I remember writing about leaving the theater angry after watching Hoodwinked 2 with my kids, because it's insulting to me that the writers didn't have enough respect for kids, or their parents, to work in clever comedy and instead resorted to, well, what they resorted to -- for example, the scene where a mysterious voice comes out of nowhere and reminds Red Riding Hood to "use the force."
It will be interesting to see if Escape from Planet Earth makes some of the same mistakes, or if it will be a little more original...
