Rachel Weisz plays the cunning Evanora in the upcoming Disney prequel Oz the Great and Powerful, which opens in theaters March 8. When we sat down with Rachel to talk about her role in the movie, she aptly described Evanora as a character who is "Disney bad." She's a villainess and proud of it. Though she has everyone fooled, not the least of whom is her adoring sister, Theodora.
Her character follows in the tradition of children's fairytales. Rachel explained, "I mean I think it's to teach children about good and evil and morality, and I think there's a reason why there's been for hundreds of years the tradition of [children's tales] being scary...I don't think it's damaging, fairytales. I think they're kind of important, archetypal stories." Evanora's sinister ways have set the scene for the story of Oz to take place, and it is her force of opposition which leads to the challenges that reveal the true characters of those within hear reach.
