August Rush - Official Synopsis
A charismatic young Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and a sheltered young cellist (Keri Russell) have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, orphaned by circumstance. Years later, performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams) who gives him the name August Rush, the child (Freddie Highmore) uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth.
August Rush - Interesting Facts for Kids
In order to play her part as renowned cellist Lyla Novacek, actress Keri Russell actually learned to play cello. Although she has no prior experience playing the instrument, she was able to learn the correct bowing for three intricate pieces from Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Bach. The sound in the movie is not actually Keri playing, but by learning the music, she was able to make her on-camera performances look real.
Freddie Highmore, who already played clarinet and read music prior to the project, also learned a little more about music. He practiced some guitar work and tried his hand at conducting. Even though he was not really conducting a symphony, Freddie wanted to make the scenes look realistic.
