The Bottom Line

Bringing the talking pet movie Cats & Dogs to Blu-ray does not do much to enhance the video or audio quality of the movie. Also, there are no new special features that make the upgrade worth it. The movie is popular with kids, but parents should know that the movie contains some rude humor and mild language.

Guide Review - Cats and Dogs - Blu-ray Combo Pack

Talking animal movies are in one of those "you either love them or hate them" categories. Kids almost always love them, but the 2001 movie Cats & Dogs has a large following from audiences of all ages. Playing on the old canine-feline rivalry, this animal action movie finds the dogs -- man's best friend -- trying to save humankind from a cat plan to take over the world. With the theatrical release of a sequel movie, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, the original Cats & Dogs is now available on Blu-ray.

Taking this movie to HD doesn't enhance it all that much. The special effects were great at the time, but are now a little outdated, so there just isn't opportunity to create the fantastic audio effects, and the CGI isn't the high quality of what we see now. For fans of the movie, yes, it's great to have an HD option, but it isn't one of those must-haves for a Blu-ray collection.

Most interesting for kids and families, are the making-of features that show how filmmakers used real animals, puppets, and computer effects to make the movie. Although, the features were generally available on the DVD as well, so if you're going to upgrade, new features are not the reason to do so.

In case you haven't seen the film, parents should know that the movie contains some rude humor (like dogs sniffing each others' behinds to throw off humans who might realize they were actually plotting something) and quite a few uses of "Oh my god" or other similar phrases.
