Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess - Summary

In this fanciful Dora DVD featuring the new voice of Dora, Caitlin Sanchez, Dora and her friends discover that a beautiful snow princess has been locked in a tower by a witch and needs their help. Dora encourages viewers at home to join in as she crosses the ocean, passes the snowy hills, and travels though a cave in order to get to the tower and save la princessa.

An animated, music-filled story, Dora Saves the Snow Princess entertains and educates preschoolers. The show focuses on a curriculum of basic concepts such as colors, sizes, and problem-solving. Of course, the show also incorporates Spanish words and phrases, and the cultural learning continues as Dora and her friends receive help from an Inuit girl on a dog sled.

Dora Saves the Snow Princess - Guide Review

Dora Saves the Snow Princess follows the same format as previous Dora adventures: Dora and her friends need to solve a problem, the map tells them where to go, and they enlist the help of viewers as they encounter challenges along their journey. Some of the challenges seem a bit contrived, even for preschoolers' movies, but children still enjoy the stories. This Dora movie, however, is unique because it incorporates the new emphases of Dora the Explorer season 5 -- math, Spanish phrases, and culture.

Dora Saves the Snow Princess incorporates the basic math concept of comparing object sizes. Also, the story contains more Spanish than previous episodes, including many Spanish phrases that are used throughout the story. In all of the new Dora episodes, Dora will meet a new friend from a different cultural background; in Dora Saves the Snow Princess, she meets an Inuit girl who uses her dog sled to help Dora and her friends.

These new elements provide interest and fun for kids. One of the reasons for Dora's initial success is that kids love learning about other kids with interesting cultural backgrounds different from their own. Children love Dora and learning about Spanish words and customs, and the new friends she meets will add to kids' excitement.

*Parents should know that there is a character in Dora Saves the Snow Princess who is a witch and uses a magic wand in an effort to thwart Dora and her friends. The use of magic is minimal, but the witch does fly on a broom, and she changes a couple of objects into animals.
