Disney has announced that production will begin this year on High School Musical 4, set to air on the Disney Channel in 2010. The new story will introduce new cast members and a love triangle set against the rivalry between the East High Wildcats and West High Knights.
Will it be a Romeo and Juliet story about forbidden love between a Wildcat and a Knight? Surely there will be some component of the classic tragic tale, but at least with Disney we know it will have a happy ending with an inspiring musical number. Most likely the two schools will come together in the end to dance and sing about a positive lesson learned concerning togetherness, unity, tolerance, acceptance, or something of the sort.
I bet the love story will be good, too, which is why I am a big fan of the High School Musical franchise. The movies are dramatic and compelling enough to hook kids and tweens, but the characters are generally great role models and the movies convey positive and uplifting messages. The HSM movies really reach the whole family and provide entertainment that everyone can enjoy together. So -- while I usually wish that movie makers would just stop with the sequels which drag a franchise on and tarnish the original -- in the case of HSM I say, the more the merrier!
