A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector's Edition - Overview
A Christmas Story is a hilarious comedy presenting a nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s. The movie centers on Ralphie, a nine-year-old boy who desperately wants only one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Air Rifle. Whenever the treasured Christmas wish comes up, all Ralphie hears from the adults in his life is, "You'll shoot your eye out!" Still, Ralphie does not give up on his mission to get Santa, or someone, to get him the rifle for Christmas.
Leading up to Christmas morning, when Ralphie will finally see if all of his tactics have payed off, we see a segment of Ralphie's life play out -- complete with boyhood mischief, family fiascoes, and schoolyard struggles. Although times are much different now than the era portrayed, the movie reminds us of what it is like to be a kid at Christmastime.
The Ultimate Collector's Edition, commemorating the film's 25th Anniversary, comes in a collectible tin and includes a cookbook, apron, cookie cutters, and photos and quotes. The DVD included in the tin is the 2-disc Special Edition. The Ultimate Collector's Edition is also available on Blu-ray (Compare Prices).
A Christmas Story - Guide Review of the Movie
A Christmas Story is one of the iconic classics in Christmas movies. The story captures so well that intense need children feel when they have their eyes set on one, all-important Christmas present. The movie celebrates and pokes fun at family life -- especially that of the 40s era. I distinctly remember watching, and loving, this movie as a kid. However, if you haven't seen it in a while, you will definitely want to watch it before you pop it on for your own kids. There are many scenes that would be completely unacceptable in the family movies of today.
The movie contains a significant amount of language, including the "a" word several times spoken by kids. In addition, you may remember Ralphie's big slip of the tongue when he says the "f" word (we only hear him say "fudge," but he explains that he really used the bad word). Also, we often hear Ralphie's father spout off a stream of unintelligible obscenities.
In addition to the obscenities, there are several incidents involving boyhood mischief such as triple dog dares, lying, schoolyard bullies, and a nasty fight. Also, Ralphie shows great interest in his father's new lamp, which is the shape of a leg in a fishnet stocking, and which he refers to as "electric sex." Ralphie's parents are twice shown drinking wine, and the father even offers Ralphie a taste, but mom interferes. The scenes are all played for comedy and to reflect the way things were in those times, but young kids will not get the meaning or the spoofs.
