More on Journey 1 & 2 and Jules Verne
Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist and is often referred to as the father (or one of the fathers) of science fiction. A forward thinker with a great imagination, Verne writes about adventures that take readers anywhere from the center of the earth, to outer space, to the depths of the sea. His classic works have been translated into many languages and studied by students all over the world. His most notable books include Around the World in 80 Days, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, among many more including The Mysterious Island.
The movie Journey to the Center of the Earth was one of the first to bring back 3D big time in 2008. The movie is a grand adventure full of cheesy lines, 3D gimmicks and unbelievable feats. However, the movie is a lot of fun for kids, as it offers amusement park ride style adventure that does not get overly disturbing or frightening. Also, even though the Journey movies are only loosely based on the Jules Verne books, they offer a great opportunity to encourage kids to read the books and think about the differences between the books and the movies in addition to analyzing the merit of Verne's work considering the time period he lived in.
With a cast like Dwayne Johnson, who has become a sort of king of family flicks; Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical fame; and Josh Hutcherson, a proven fabulous actor starring in the highly anticipated Hunger Games movie, kids will be clamoring to see this new 3D adventure.
