The Penguins of Madagascar - Overview

Based on the sneaky band of penguins in the DreamWorks Animation movie Madagascar, The Penguins of Madagascar is an animated series that follows the adventures of a diverse group of penguins who operate their version of an elite strike force within the Central Park Zoo. What would the zoo do without Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private to keep an eye out and solve problems with their efficient secret missions?

Keeping the penguins on their toes is the booty shakin' party animal King Julien, a ring-tailed lemur whose reign has gone to his head. Despite Julien and his friends' annoying habits and trouble-making ways, though, the penguins never shirk their duty to keep order at the zoo.

The Penguins of Madagascar - Guide Review for Parents

The penguins kind of stole the show in the original Madagascar movie, earning them a spot in the next movie and a couple of shorts including a Christmas special. Now, they have their own show. The animated series aimed at kids and families brings the penguins to Central Park Zoo, with their commando style operations coming into play as they try to keep order at the zoo and keep life at the zoo comfortable and happy for all. The humor surrounding their capers provides a good mix for parents and children, without being overly crude or gross.

The penguins and friends do use some mildly rude words like "butt" and "stupid," and they sometimes engage in mild name calling or belittling. Many episodes also contain cartoonish violence and slapstick comedy, which is to be expected in pretty much any animated show geared toward viewers older than age five. The characters are fairly stuck in their defined character roles, and kids may imitate the secret ops language or decide to plan some covert missions of their own. The penguins' missions generally revolve around random and comical things like getting King Julien's groove back or keeping the temperature of their exhibit comfortable.
