Bonus Features
The Spiderwick Chronicles Special Collector’s Edition DVD and the Blu-ray disc have the same special features; however, the Blu-ray disc allows the viewer to access the Field Guide and read from the Field Guide during the movie. Surprisingly, the bonus features do not include any games or activities. The features are mostly related to the making of the movie, which I find to be far more valuable, as DVD games are usually OK at best and quite cumbersome to play using a TV remote control.
Learning about the history behind a film and the film-making process is fascinating fun for the whole family, but I have a BIG WARNING for parents regarding The Spiderwick Chronicles bonus features: Don't let your kids watch them if you are trying to help them understand that the creatures in the film are not real. The director makes a point in several of the features of looking into the camera and insisting that the creatures are real - not good if you want little kids to sleep at night! In addition, Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, the writer and illustrator of the original books, talk about a real letter they received from some children who claimed to have seen fairies, and who supposedly have artifacts from said encounters.
