Spectacular! - Overview
An original Nickelodeon primetime movie, Spectacular! tells the story of a high school rocker in need of a wake-up call. High school student and wannabe rock star Nikko has a lot of talent. The problem is: he knows it. Nikko’s band has had enough of his inconsiderate behavior, though, and his vocal flair won’t be enough to carry him this time. Not only does he get kicked out of his own band, Nikko also gets dumped by his girlfriend. No worries, though, Nikko figures he’ll just record an awesome demo and sing his way to the top without them.
Surprisingly, Nikko gets his first "offer" before he has even had time to brush himself off. Courtney, a girl from school, begs Nikko to become the new lead male in their high school show choir, Spectacular. Nikko has a good laugh at the idea, until he realizes that the prize money for winning the national competition would be just the amount he needs to record his demo. He suddenly decides to swallow his pride and kindly help Courtney out.
What Nikko didn’t consider, is the competition. To win the prize, Spectacular must beat rival group Ta-Da – the group that stole Spectacular’s former lead male, Royce. The group is led by the catty but beautiful Tammi, who just happens to be Royce’s new girlfriend, and they are good. The hard work preparing for the competition refuels Nikko’s flame and the drive he has to perform, and the influence of his new friends helps him realize some mistakes he’s made, but when it comes down to one tough decision between his new life and his old one, what will Nikko choose?
Spectacular! - Guide Review for Parents
Spectacular! presents a new high school love story that will resonate with tweens, but I am not sure as many kids will connect with the mediocre '80s rock-style soundtrack and the show choir component. The songs from the movie are OK, but they don't have the catchy chorus phrases and emotional lyrics that tweens are down with these days. However, while Spectacular! is not as bright, upbeat, and refined as some of the recent highly popular TV movies for tweens, the show does have a decent storyline and the lesson learned by the lead character is very relevant to kids.
The main character in the movie, Nikko, starts out with a self-centered attitude, acting like the world revolves around him. I was impressed though, that the show ended with Nikko having grown up more and showing a little more humility than I expected. He's a good character for kids to watch as he learns to recognize and appreciate the contributions of others around him.Content Overview: (contains spoilers)
Nikko starts out the movie as an egocentric rocker singing “Don’t tell me what I gotta do…” He even busts up his band mate's amp on stage. Kids in the movie display some additional disrespectful behavior, mostly having to do with teasing and mocking other kids.
The movie contains romantic references and scenes. One girl has obviously been hurt by a guy who had broken up with her and betrayed her. A girl and guy sing a romantic song together, and a romantic kiss is shown.
Spectacular! - Discuss the Movie
- Why did Nikko get kicked out of his band? What made him feel like he had the right to treat others the way he did?
- Why does Courtney get upset at Nikko's surprise? What could he and the group have done differently to avoid hurting her?
- Why doesn't Nikko seem to want prove a point to his band members by the end of the movie? They kicked him out, after all. Should they get to take part in his success?
