VeggieTales: Sweetpea Beauty - A Girl After God's Own Heart - Overview

This delightful VeggieTales DVD contains two princessy stories. In the short story Snooderella, a Dr.Seuss-style rhyme loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale, Snooderella gets a fabulous makeover, and she finally gets to know what it feels like to be the belle of the ball. But, unfortunately, her new 'do expires at midnight, and she is back to her unattractive old self. When the king comes and asks her to dance despite her less than glamorous appearance, though, he helps her see that she is truly loved and valued, and that she is beautiful just the way she is.

Then, we visit a mash-up of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in the story of Sweetpea Beauty - A Girl After God's Own Heart. When Queen Blueberry 's mischievous magic mirror breaks the bad news that the queen is no longer the most beautiful in the land, Queen Blueberry decides to get rid of the competition - namely Sweetpea Beauty, the sweetest and most beautiful girl in the land, and best friend to the queen's own son. However, Sweetpea is able to make friends wherever she goes, and she finds seven adorable outcast snow peas who help her get back into the kingdom to try and help the queen understand that true beauty is actually a reflection of what is inside. But, will the queen's change of heart be too little too late?

In my opinion, there couldn't be a more important message for young girls today than is put forth in this VeggieTales DVD. Almost all of today's most popular shows for kids ages six and up focus on fame, fortune and outward beauty. To get this message about the importance of inner beauty to girls when they are young and so impressionable is a great effort by Big Idea. I will absolutely encourage my girls to watch this movie any time they want, and I enjoyed talking with them about the symbolism behind Madame Blueberry's outward expression of her inner heart.

Not only do the stories have a great message, but they are also colorfully animated and great fun for kids to watch. The characters are charming and interesting to young children, and the stories speak to kids on their level. Comedy and silly songs are also injected to make the shows even more fun. And, as usual, the Veggies tie these two lovely stories to scriptures, thus helping kids relate biblical passages to the animated stories and to real life.
